Portugal 2 Euro (2002)
Bi-metallic coin with a Nordic gold inner disc and a cupro-nickel outer ring. The obverse displays the royal seal of Portugal dated 1144 surrounded by seven castles and the inscription PORTUGAL with the year 2002. The reverse shows the numeral 2 over a map of Europe with the inscription EURO and the twelve EU stars.
Portugal joined the Eurozone on 1 January 1999 and introduced euro coins and banknotes into circulation on 1 January 2002. The Portuguese 2 euro obverse design, created by Vítor Santos, draws on the royal seal of Afonso Henriques (1144), the first king of Portugal, symbolising the continuity of Portuguese identity since the foundation of the kingdom.
