Historical Context

Germany has issued a series of commemorative 2 Euro coins celebrating each of its sixteen federal states (Bundesländer). The 2025 issue honours Saarland, the smallest of Germany's western states, using the iconic Saarschleife as its motif. The Saarschleife, a dramatic horseshoe bend of the Saar river, is considered the emblem of Saarland and is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Germany. Saarland has a distinct history shaped by its location on the Franco-German border, having been under League of Nations administration and later a French protectorate before rejoining the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957.
