Cyprus 2 Euro 2020
Bi-metallic coin with a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel inner disk. The obverse displays a stylised Chalcolithic figurine known as the Pomos idol, flanked by the inscriptions 'ΚΥΠΡΟΣ' and 'KIBRIS' with the date 2020. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the outer ring. The reverse bears the common 2 Euro design with a map of Europe and the denomination.
The Pomos idol is a cross-shaped terracotta figurine dating to the Chalcolithic period (circa 3000 BCE), discovered in Cyprus and now housed in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia. It is one of the most iconic prehistoric artefacts from the island and has appeared on all Cypriot 2 euro coins since Cyprus joined the Eurozone in 2008. The dual inscription 'ΚΥΠΡΟΣ / KIBRIS' reflects the island's Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
