Latvia, 2014
Latvia 2 Euro 2014 – Milda
Bi-metallic coin with a Nordic gold centre and nickel brass outer ring. The obverse depicts the head of Milda, a traditional allegorical figure of Latvia wearing a folk headdress, with the inscription 'LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA' and the date 2014. The reverse bears the standard European 2 euro design with the numeral '2', the word 'EURO', and a map of Europe, surrounded by twelve stars.
Latvia adopted the euro on 1 January 2014, becoming the eighteenth member of the eurozone. This coin was the first regular-issue 2 euro piece struck for Latvia. The portrait of Milda, originally designed by sculptor Rihards Zariņš for the interwar Latvian lats coinage, was retained as a symbol of national continuity and cultural identity.
